Today I’d like to speak to you on learning on the job. Certain times opportunities comes our way and we second guess what we can do. Truth be told sometimes we have NO CLUE on what we are supposed to do. Should we be upfront and back down from this opportunity that is also a challenge, or “fake it ’til we make it?” That is, say we can do it then figure it out? The answer is yes, fake it ’til we make it. This phrase isn’t about pretending you are someone whom you are not so as to mislead people, but rather saying yes to the opportunity and then learning or doing research on what you are to do, then executing.
A time in my life I had to fake it was when I was starting my media journey. I was at Ghetto Radio at the time as an intern, and had been given the task of field reporting. I had no clue what it entailed but I took it up saying I could do it and even report live from location. Fam, I had to fake it. It did not end there though. You see, if I had said I knew field reporting but then stopped at that, knowing full well that I didn’t, that would be a plain lie. But I went online and researched on the do’s and don’ts of field reporting, asked questions on how it should be done, watched TV and learnt some techniques here and there. I moved from FAKING IT to MAKING IT.
So you see, sometimes you just have to learn on the job. Say “yes I can” even if you don’t have a clue, or “I may not know how to do that but give me until end of day tomorrow and I will have figured it out.” That not only shows initiative to your boss, but also adds value to your CV because hey, you just learnt something new all by yourself.
What do you feel about that phrase “fake it ’til you make it? What instance have you had to do it? Share below! Someone might need your guidance.
