This passed Sunday while at church (yes, I do go) my pastor was talking about respecting authority. He said you may not agree with the leadership of say a President, but you must respect the office. The title. I have always-ok, not really always- but mostly respected authority and those that have been put in charge.
But a question has always lingered in my mind. In today’s world blurred with corruption, murder, and so much injustice, when someone ascends to power, is it really God given? Is it really God’s way of declaring that this person is the chosen one?
If we are to look at the Bible in the old testament, where Kings spoke with God and were even hand picked, we can somewhat see how just they were and see how they tried to live up to God’s will. Yes, some made mistakes and paid dearly for them (like Moses and King Saul, David as well) but when they were picked, enyewe you saw what God was looking for. We unfortunately don’t see that in today’s world.
Now all you need is money and you will get anyone to sing your praises and declare you KING. We see some of our so called ‘chosen by God’ leaders uttering ugly words that divide and generate hate then they sit next to the pulpit on Sunday morning. How I wish we still lived in the days of being struck by lightening! Lol. That would trend. Clearly people don’t fear God anymore. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom after all.
I think religion and that whole “Leadership is God ordained” is the very reason most of us are scared to call out our leaders when they do wrong. We think only the guy who put them in charge has the right to ask and check them… I dunno…Maybe just an African thing? Religion, and not only in Africa, is the opium of the masses as once said by German philosopher and economist Karl Marx.
Bringing me back to my earlier question. As a young person, maybe you are even a leader in your student’s council, do you believe leadership comes from a higher power? Have your say below.
